I LOVE to decorate my home with my own personal style! But when I decorate with something that I hand made, it makes it so much more fun and special. These Button Art Canvas Creations are a great piece to add to your own home or to give away as gifts. Michael’s, Hobby Lobby (or any craft store near you) usually has a huge selection of crafting paper. Make the background whatever you like. Pick any shape that you prefer. Make the buttons a color that works with your decor. Endless possibilities! Just how I like my crafts to be! 🙂 🙂
You will need:
Canvas (8” x 10″) or larger if you prefer
12″ x 12″ Decorative paper of your choice
Mod Podge with a foam brush
Buttons in whatever color and size you like (for this project, I used approximately 120 buttons per picture)
Aleene’s Tacky Glue (**note my picture shows a glue gun, but I thought it out more and tacky glue works way better to hold down the buttons**)
1 – Cut out an 8″ x 10″ piece of decorative paper. I decided to cover all four sides of the canvas with the paper as well. I would recommend doing this, as it gives the picture a much more finished look if you are going to hang it on a wall.
2 – Using the foam brush, put a layer of Mod Podge on the canvas and gently press down and smooth out the paper so that there are no bubbles in it. Mine did bubble up a little bit, but they went down as the glue dried.
3 – Continue and do the same thing to all four sides. Add a layer of Mod Podge and attach each paper strip.
4 – Once it is dry, apply another layer of Mod Podge, but this time on top of the paper (on all sides) to seal it. Again, wait for everything to dry before you begin to glue on the buttons.
5 – Pick a shape that you would like to make with the buttons and trace it onto the front of the canvas.
6 – Begin gluing the buttons on, outlining the shape first. Then keep adding buttons to fill in the shape.
7 – Finally, I added a second layer of buttons on top of the first to fill in some of the large gaps. You don’t need to fill in every gap on the picture, but add just enough to make the layer look even. See below for two of my finished projects 🙂 I am especially loving the second picture with paper that looks like wood. Simple to do and fun to make!
