Mason jars have become quite popular recently to use for more than just canning food. Whether they are used as a glass to drink out of or provide decorative storage for your home, they are fun to use and you can do so many things with them.
I decorated these mason jars with scrapbook paper, mod podge and raffia. There are hundreds of paper patterns and colors to choose from, so the design possibilities are endless!!
I used the following materials:
Kerr Wide Mouth Quart Mason Jars (32 oz)
12″ x 12″ Scrapbook Paper of your choice (you want to make sure the paper isn’t too thin or it will tear)
Raffia or Ribbon for the top
A star shape (or whatever shape you prefer) for the center of the front of the jar
1. Take the scrapbook paper and wrap it around the mason jar to measure where to cut the paper. You want the top of the paper to come up to about an inch below the rim of the jar as shown in the picture below. In the back, only have the paper overlap slightly.
2. Fold the piece of paper and the star shape in half. Cut out the star from the center of the paper.
3. Using the foam brush, apply the mod podge to the mason jar and slowly wrap the paper around the jar. Don’t apply Mod Podge to the center where the clear glass opening will be. If you do accidentally get some on that spot, it wipes off easily with a damp paper towel. The paper doesn’t always fit exactly smooth around the jar. You may need to slightly crease the paper in a few places to make it wrap properly, which is just fine.
4. After the paper is securely on the jar, go ahead and place a coat of Mod Podge to the entire outside of the paper. This will help to seal it and give it a clear, shiny finish. Once it is dry, you can apply another coat if you would like.
5. While you are waiting for the jar to dry, Mod Podge the piece of star that you cut out onto to the lid of the jar.
6. I used two different colors of raffia to wrap around the top. Again using the foam brush, apply the Mod Podge around the rim of the jar and stick the raffia on. Don’t be afraid to use too much Mod Podge to get the raffia to stick. I know it is a white color when it is first applied, but it will dry clear.
7. I made this particular jar as a gift for my son’s teacher for the holidays. Scraps of paper made a great “Handmade for You” tag and tied it on with ribbon. I love adding those personal touches!
Here are my tips for this project:
-I recommend using the Kerr Wide Mouth Mason Jars because they have the least amount of words and pictures on them. This makes it easier and smoother for the paper to stick to. I have made these with different sizes and brands of mason jars. It works, but it is trickier to get the paper to glue on smoothly.
-If you don’t want to fill the jars with candy, another idea is to put a battery operated candle or small LED light strand inside the jar and use them to decorate your home.
