Succulents are one of my absolute favorite kind of plants. These Succulent Plants in Layered Glass Containers can beautify any room in your home. There are so many different varieties and colors…..you can pretty much decorate any room in your home with them! Since I live in the Chicago area, I’m not able to see any of these beauties outside in the wild, so this is the only way for me to enjoy them year round 🙂
Whenever I am making gifts for people, I like to keep it easy on myself and make them in multiples. That way it saves time on my end and everyone gets the same gift (in a different variety or color).
I made these DIY Succulent Plants one year for Mother’s Day and they were a big hit. The best part was I got (almost everything) at the dollar store! Dollar Tree has a great floral/crafting section and the quality of the items is just fine for making things like this.
Succulent Plants in Layered Glass Containers
Small glass cube planter (I used a 3″ x 3″ x 3″)
Small white rocks (or whatever color you prefer)
Sand (again, whatever color you prefer)
Natural colored stones
- First, do a small layer of the white stones on the bottom of the glass cubs (about 1/2 inch).
- Next, layer the white sand on top of the stones (about 1/2 inch).
- Put in some cactus & succulent potting soil and add the plant. I found these plants at Menards, but usually anywhere with a large garden center has them depending on your location and the time of year. Be sure to leave enough space on the top to add the natural stones. Note – you do not need to use special cactus & succulent potting soil. The benefit of using it is that the soil already has perlite and sand added to it. This helps to improve drainage for the plant. Cactuses and succulents are not happy sitting in wet roots 🙁
- Place the natural colored stones on top around the plant to give it a nice, finished look.
I know that the idea of planting your own succulents may be intimidating to some people who say they don’t have a “green thumb”. The awesome part about that is that you can buy artificial succulents to fit into these planters so you never have to worry about them getting enough water, sun or care!! You can enjoy the beauty with no hassle 🙂
I LOVE succulents! I will definitely try this!
Awesome, Jessica! Easy to do and so fun to look at! 🙂 Thanks for reading!
